A New Pedagogy is Emerging

The move towards a new pedagogy is influenced by technology and the abundance of information available online.  Our students are digital natives. They expect to use today's technology in their learning.  Students are able to access, apply, and demonstrate learning in various ways. They must develop the skills and knowledge to use technology to locate and apply information.  These skills are essential to our students' success.

Learning That Engages

In the classroom, technology can help students receive authentic learning experiences.  Learning transcends the classroom as the Internet is used as a vehicle for locating information, sharing ideas, and communicating with others. Teleconferencing professionals and experts that can speak and mentor students can add authenticity to student work.  Designing learning activities that require real world interaction will motivate and engage students into deeper learning.

Students Using Technology

Students are using technology outside of the classroom to learn about the things that interest them. We need to embrace their curiousity to help them develop the skills they use in their serarch for knowledge and lifelong learning. I was able to capture my daughter using facetime to teach her friend how to play a tune on the piano.

Using Technology to Differentiate Instruction

Technology used in blended learning approaches to instruction helps individualize learning for students and leads them into deeper learning. Using technology teachers and students have access to resources of varying academic levels.  Information may be presented in a multimedia format that works for learners with various learning styles.   There is flexibility in learning and more opportunity for choices in learning. Students will be more engaged and take ownership in their learning when they have a choice in their learning.

Guiding Principles - Ideas and Concepts for Instructional Technology Integration

The New Literacies

A teacher’s knowledge and skill in the application of technology, pedagogy, and content, as defined in the TPACK model, are required to effectively integrate technology in teaching.  In order to develop the student skills required by the new and digital literacies, teachers must employ the concepts of TPACK.  They need knowledge of the ICTs used in the new literacies, have a clear understanding of what they want to teach, and must utilize teaching methods that are conducive to both.

Online Research and Media Skills (ORMS) Model

Moving from being a consumer to a producer of Web content is an empowering shift for our students. Teachers are excited about offering the Internet as a medium of expression.  However,  they are faced with challenges as they move to use the Internet as a medium for expression.  Students will benefit from lessons and activities aimed at addressing these challenges. Making our students aware of their online identity and reinforcing good online etiquette will help our students be successful online contributors.

Personal Learning Networks

The advantage that a teacher has by creating a Personal Learning Network and joining a Community of Practice is the connection to other educators who share similar interests.  Teachers who are using technology benefit greatly because they  learn from each other and are able to share experiences.   Technology is evolving so rapidly that joining groups and communities that focus on classroom technology will help keep teachers informed and up to date.
